Course Objectives

This course helps those who in health, social care or adult and young people’s settings and other related settings like foster care, to gain general understanding of different substances that can be misused by people in their care. The course teaches greater understanding of the effects of substance misuse and how to deal with people who are substance abuser and somewhat addicted to substances.

At the end of this course, learners must be able to understand:

  • Meaning and concepts of substance abuse.

  • Types of substance

  • Signs and symptoms of substance abuse

  • Why people abuse substance

  • Meaning of recreational drugs

  • Alcohol abuse and its effects.

  • How to support individuals who are substance abusers
